The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant... A Creative Solution Visit WIPP and tour our nation's first deep-geologic repository for safe, permanent disposal of radioactive waste in a 225-million-year-old salt formation. After hearing a brief overview of the facility, visitors will travel 2,150 feet (almost one-half mile) underground to see, first hand, where the U.S. Department of Energy is disposing of transuranic waste from more than 20 temporary storage sites nationwide.
