Miss Bonnie Elizabeth Anderson

    2005 Fellowship Recipient
  • Bio:
  • Elizabeth was born and raised in Lafayette, LA. After graduating high school from the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts, she earned bachelor's degrees in both geology and chemistry from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette with summa cum laude honors. She focused her interest on radiochemistry during her first year as a geoscience graduate student at the University of Michigan, where she continues to work toward a Ph.D.
  • Abstract:
  • Technetium and uranium are highly mobile in oxidizing environments. Some iron compounds found in both the environment and corroding steel have been shown to sorb these elements and possibly promote the reduction of pertechnetate, TcO4-, to TcO2(s) and UO22+ to UO2(s). The mechanism and extent of these reactions is currently poorly understood. Mechanisms will be explored with quantum mechanical modeling and used to interpret results from experiments examining the redox chemistry of corroding waste packages and sorption on various compounds.
